Your responsibilities 

 

As “Optical Engineer“, you develop new optical sensing systems from concept development, to engineering, to production incl. system modelling, optoelectronic and optomechanical design, simulation, tests, and coding. You are also responsible for optical component selection, characterization, and testing techniques incl. laboratory optical systems setup and measurements. The main responsibilities for this role are as follows:

Development activities: 

  • Bring new optical sensing technologies through maturation from concept to engineering to production
  • Design and specify opto-mechanical assemblies/sub-assemblies of optical sensing systems, and ensure that they comply with the system specification
  • Generate the documentation for producing assemblies/sub-assemblies, or effectively delegate and supervise this task (e.g. BOM, drawings, programming files, …)
  • Coordinate suppliers and technology providers for the development of optical assemblies/sub-assemblies
  • Develop or support the development of test tooling required and  drive the validation tests to verify that the designed assembly/sub-assembly comply with the specification
  • Support the qualification tests for qualification and certification purpose
  • Generate the development artifacts of the designed assembly/sub-assembly in line with our development process

Modelling and characterization activities:

  • Be responsible for optical component selection, characterization, and testing techniques
  • Be responsible for laboratory optical systems setup and measurements
  • Develop system modelling, optical simulation, and coding (such as MATLAB or Python)

Project Engineering:

  • Elaborate plans for innovation projects or product development sub-projects 
  • Manage small project teams and external partners
  • Ensure timely delivery of the project activities with expected quality 
  • Manage project budget, reporting and risks

 

Who we are looking for

  • University Degree (Master) in Physics, Microengineering or Optical Engineering, with specialization in optics and/or photonics 
  • At least 5 years of industrial experience in the development of complex optical systems, preferably optical sensing systems and optical fiber sensor applications 
  • Deep knowledge in optical simulations tools, such as Ansys Zemax or Lumerical and in simulation and modelling tools such as Matlab and Python 
  • Hands-on laboratory experience is required, in particular prototyping of optical systems, optical characterization tools & techniques and optical fiber assembly and handling 
  • Experience in project engineering/management with good knowledge of MS Project and Agile project management tools (JIRA, MS Planner,…) 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and active listener
  • Autonomous, proactive and open and “can do” attitude
  • Out-of-the-box thinking and curiosity
  • Fluent in English with very good command of French (spoken and written). 

 

Ideally, you will also have

  • Knowledge of MEMS / MOEMS design and micro-fabrication (clean room) processes is a strong asset 
  • Experience in industrialization and production of optical systems is a strong asset 
  • Experience in product development in aerospace or highly regulated domain
